Tim showed up at 10:00 carrying five bags of groceries. “I grabbed some more of that mac and cheese he liked, and a few other things.” Fiona tried not to ogle the bulging muscles in his arms as he carried it all in with ease. He was wearing shorts today. She loved his tone thighs, his athletic gait. He noticed that she’d looked there and she blushed, but he misunderstood. He set the groceries down, then looked at his prosthetic. “I figured it was time to let him see it. He’ll have to eventually.”

She said, “He might be curious, but he’ll be fine. He’s already quite taken with you, Tim. More than anyone else I’ve ever seen. I think he knows. He may not totally understand why, but he knows you’re his.” Her smile was sweet, encouraging.

She began to put away the groceries when she noticed that he’d bought food for her as well. Tea, coffee, cream, butter, a variety of fresh fruit, and some grass fed beef. Some ready made soups and healthy, hearty freezer dinners. Connor would never eat this stuff, so it had to be for her. Her throat thickened, not willing to read into the fact that he was subtly taking care of her. She felt a pang of shame, as well. Shame that she couldn’t make enough money for a house and a full fridge. He noticed that she’d stopped, with a curry soup in her hand. She was tearing up. “It’s okay to accept help, Fio. It’s why God gave him two parents.”

She cleared her throat. “Thank you. It’s lovely.”

He left it at that, trying to give her space and let her keep her pride.

Tim walked over to Connor, who was jumping on his trampoline. “Oh, a morning person. My kind of man. Connor, do you want to play with Daddy today?” Connor stopped and looked at him, then at the leg. He got off the trampoline and approached Tim, inspecting his leg. “Ouchy. Daddy got an ouchy.” Connor fingered the cuff, then the extension, and his shoes. “But Daddy’s all better now. Just like a robot. So, how about it. Play?” He knelt down, making eye contact. He pointed to his own chin and said, “Play. Connor and Daddy will play.”
